Three girls who were imprisoned by their mother in a house, of indescribable filth, for seven years, may never recover from the ordeal, experts said last night.
The girls were shut away from the outside world, existing in almost complete darkness, playing only with mice and communicating in their own language.
When they were discovered, their home in a smart, upper middle-class suburb had no running water and was filled with waste and excrement a metre high. The floor was corroded by mice urine.
...The girls' ordeal was apparently sparked by their parents' divorce, after which their mother, a 53-year-old lawyer, suffered a breakdown. But she won custody of the girls -- then aged 7, 11 and 13 -- and withdrew them from school ...
...Her husband, a local judge in Linz, Upper Austria, named only as Andreas M, was not allowed to see them once, despite his claims for access reaching court nine times.
... The mother was said to have been summoned to court nine times during the seven years after complaints by the father and neighbours, but officials never found a reason to investigate the case more closely.
...Waltraud Kubelka, a therapist who is now treating the three girls, said that their psychosocial and physical development was "catastrophic". "The oldest one is doing very badly and has no prospects of recovery. She was severely undernourished and practically anorexic after her release. The two younger ones will need years to come to terms with their horrific childhood.

A father came home from work to discover that his wife had murdered their two young sons then hanged herself.
Richard Talby found the bodies of his wife, Susan, and sons Joseph, 4, and Paul, 2, at his home in Peterborough on Thursday evening. The boys are thought to have been suffocated or strangled. Mr Talby's father, John Talby, told The Times that Mrs Talby had suffered from postnatal depression after her younger son was born, but appeared to have overcome it.
...This week, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) issued guidance to the NHS urging doctors and midwives to do more to identify women at risk of postnatal depression. As many as one in seven suffers a mental health disorder at some point during pregnancy or after the birth. However, experts believe that the number of sufferers who have a diagnosis could be as low as 30 per cent.

Scrap women's prisons, peer says
...women should be held in units near their families and not in large jails like the one in Holloway, London.
If adopted by the home secretary, Baroness Corston's approach would see Holloway and about 14 other all-female prisons in England and Wales shut down or converted into jails for men.
Lady Corston is also expected to recommend a significant cut in the overall number of women who are sent to jail, with greater use of community punishments instead.
...There are currently 4,300 women in jail in England and Wales, and campaigners want better treatment and support to stop them re-offending.
Frances Crook, director of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said "prison simply doesn't work" for women.

A mother wept yesterday as she admitted drugging and drowning her 11-year-old son after the boy's absent father stopped sending her money.
Jennifer Taylor pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility after schoolboy James was found dead on December 2 last year. She had taken a suspected drugs overdose and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
It has since emerged that James's father is a wealthy Egyptian who works abroad and is not a UK resident.
Days after James died at the home he shared with his mother in New Ash Green, near Dartford, Kent, friends and neighbours told how Taylor had been suffering from financial hardship and had told them the boy's father had stopped sending money.
James had been withdrawn from his private school and was being educated at a state grammar school. Yesterday, 44-year-old Taylor, dressed in a black T-shirt and trousers and wearing a gold crucifix, sobbed as she stood before Judge Andrew Patience at Maidstone Crown Court.
The court heard that while a postmortem examination revealed James had died of drowning, traces of drugs were also found in his body. His mother entered a not guilty plea to a charge of murder at an earlier hearing and appeared yesterday for just ten minutes.
Prosecutor Eleanor Laws told the court that three psychiatrists concluded Taylor had diminished responsibility at the time of the youngster's death. Defence QC Sarah Forshaw revealed that she had been unable to speak to Taylor about the killing, explaining: 'It is a curious feature of this case that we - the legal team - have not been able to discuss the particulars of the incident at all. It causes obvious problems.' Taylor will be excused attending the next court hearing on July 20 when
The judge confirmed that he had read reports that Taylor was suffering from a mental disorder and told her: 'If you do not wish to be present to hear the facts put before you, you need not attend, but you must be back for passing of sentence.' At the time of his death Caroline Birtwell, the headteacher at his former school, said: 'James was a lovely boy who was always very happy. He had a fabulous sense of humour, and he was so bright and able.
'He was very popular with his peers. He played football for the school and he had a love of drama, appearing in several of our school plays.'
A neighbour said: 'James moved to Wilmington because Jenny could no longer afford for him to go to a public school.' Another neighbour, 52-year-old Jan Hadfield, added: 'James was so polite, such a good, well-behaved boy.
'Jenny told me James's father was an Egyptian who was very high up in his work and lived abroad. It is such a tragedy.' A third neighbour, Jeff Topp, 60, added: 'James was a really lovely kid. 'You could see him a mile off because he had very bushy black hair which was so distinctive. 'He was extremely polite, loved playing football and had a trampoline in his garden. 'Sometimes his ball would come over the garden fence and he would always politely ask for it back. 'Jenny was a loving mother and doted on James. There was no man in her life so he was everything to her.
