Title: Open letter to Noble Peace Committee
Post by: Amber on Oct 24, 2003, 05:07 PM
A reader of mine sent this to me.

This really irks me that the conservatives are all praising Ebadi, including Bush, while it is only the liberals and socialist groups who are coming out against her.

How long before the right become the left and the left becomes the right?

Open letter to Noble Peace Committee

12/10/2003
Dear Committee members,

We the undersigned, hereby, demonstrate our protest to the explanation given by the Noble Peace
Committee regarding awarding this year's Noble Peace Prize.

In its statement, the Committee has explained that the Peace prize is awarded to Mrs Shirin Ebadi
as "a woman who is part of the Moslem world." Thus identifying the people of Iran and millions of
men and women in all the Islamic stricken countries to this "world". The only connection of the
people in Iran has been the life of brutality and suppression imposed on them by Islamic laws. The
only aspect of Islam that people identify themselves with is to fight against it.

The statement further explains that the prize is awarded to Mrs Ebadi because "Ebadi is a conscious
Moslem. She sees no conflict between Islam and fundamental human rights." Presumably, the
Committee believes this description would initiate delight and joy to people of Iran! The fact of the
matter is that people of Iran see the Islamic Republic with all its laws and regulations as the cause
of the hardship, poverty, destitution, women's suppression and the brutal state of children's rights.
We the undersigned would like to express our indignation to such explanations and implications.

We together with the people of Iran, see the law of hijab (Islamic veil) as violation of our most
basic rights. We see how Islam is enforcing sexual apartheid in the society, we see how Islamic law
on marriage perpetuates rape of children, we see how Islamic law of eye for an eye and stoning is
ruining the lives of millions of people in Iran... The list is endless. We regard the whole philosophy
of Islamic government in violation of human and civil rights. Contrary to your explanation, there is
a whole world of contradiction between political Islam and human rights. There is no common
ground between women's and children's rights and Islam. Your statement not only refuses to
address these issues, but by endorsing, it paves the way to consolidating the very cause of violation
of human rights in Iran.

People in Iran, especially women, are paying the price of such international praises, by being
denied their rights under Islamic laws. They are struggling for equality and a secular state. Twenty-
four years of torture, execution, sexual apartheid, child poverty, and the demands for freedom and a
secular state through the daily struggle of people in Iran are proof enough that there is every
contradiction between Islam and basic human rights.

We regard the statement by the Noble Peace Prize Committee against the interests of women,
children and the people of Iran, and hence condemn it.

Peace prize usually goes to a major war criminal who has made a pretence of supporting some peace "process".  Clearly this woman didn't qualify.

Well, this is my analysis of what is going on.

Plain and simple:  Republicans are fucking pussies.  They aren't coming out against Ebadi because they want everyone to like them.  They don't want to say anything unpopular.  They think the left would like Ebadi, they think that reform seems like a good idea, since lefties endorsed it, and like a bunch of panty wastes, they run and hide from any argument.

Meanwhile, leftists don't even support it.  Just tyrannical Europe.  I've actually gotten into discussion with other people over this, and their attitude is "who cares Islam is being forced upon the people?"  They are so fucked and warped in their support for the Islam religion that they are willing to let the Ayatollah thugs do whatever.

And they only groups coming out against Ebadi are leftists and SOCIALIST groups (like the one I printed above).  Of course, there is one uniting theme in all of them:  they do fundamentally care about people, especially the Iranian people, hence are speaking the truth.

Fuck, the whole thing rattles my brain.

"Parvin Darabi emailed your essay re her article abour Shiril Ebadi. I am writing this to ask your permission to publish it in www.faithfreedom.org "

This is from a new Iranian buddy of mine.  The first part of his response is in response to my question of why so many Iranians are socialists, and as are the groups that are advocating what I'm advocating.

------

Unfortunately, many of my compatriots are not aware of your progressive stance. By that I mean if your articles were to be circulated more amongst the Iranians, you'd indeed get a better gauge of support emanating from a wider spectrum of the intelligentsia. For instance, take a look at:

http://www.unitediranians.org/

these folks are neither socialists, nor communists nor leftists - simply patriotic Iranians who have an unswerving belief in liberty & secularism. Also keep in mind that in March of this year, the election (or rather the selection) of the Islamic parliament will be coming up. Aside from the fact that Shirin Ebadi is an ardent reformist, the ominous issue here is that with her obscurantist remarks, she might knowingly (or unknowingly) damage the election boycott movement and cause a few simpletons to vote again, basically giving legitimacy to a bankrupt regime. In February 28th, 2003, in the city council elections, 28 million out of 42 million eligible voters, chose to boycott that sham process.

Nowadays, a few are even revising her interviews in order to represent her as a secular minded activist. Her interview in Le Monde, for example, was broadcast widely (without any translation) in essence putting words in her mouth that she believes in the separation of Church and the State - no such thing ! I translated the interview verbatim and there was no indication whatsoever regarding such a claim.

The same goes for an Arabic newspaper in London, called Al-Shargh-Ol-Owsat (meaning middle-east). In fact, Ebadi herself denied such an interview in an Iranian paper (Yaas-e-noe) and overtly stated the following:
I will vote for Khatami again !
Anyway, if I could be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know. Amidst an ocean of naive commentaries which fail to move beyond the facade of issues, reading your articles is a breath of fresh air.

"How long before the right become the left and the left becomes the right?"

This is the most proverbial observation of all. This is part of the whole problem in politics altogether. Pragmatism is the downfall of the human race. Now get off your butts slackers and do it right!!

I just read the letter.  It's a moronic strawman argument.  And whoever wrote it spelled "Nobel" incorrectly.

A moronic straw man argument???   It's written from Iranians themselves.

I have literally dozens of emails from Iranians who are thankful to me for writing what I have regarding Shirin Ebadi.  That letter, and my message about her, are spot on.

They don't speak English.  When they translated the letter, they likely spelled Noble wrong, thinking it meant "Noble" as to opposed being named after someone.

Conservatives are such fucking dead heads.

It amazes me how people who know nothing about a situation come in and pass their opinion on it, as if they have a clue.

People like this make me want to  :vomit:

I challenge you to explain why it is a "moronic straw man argument"

I won't hold my breath.

Of course, I don't ever expect an intelligent response.

God, nothing irks me more than people who come to conclusions while blind to the facts of reality, not because they are too stupid to understand them, but refuse to.

Conclusions made in conceit or conclusions made because "everyone else thinks so" really disgust me.

Everything I'm saying about Shirin Ebadi is right on target.  Yet, I do all this research, get overwhelming response from the Iranian people ... and I take it to Americans ... to get blank stares.  Or, worse, scoffs.  Conservatives who are dead heads, and won't look twice at it or take an intellectual or moral stand.  My only comfort is all people I respect intellectually follow, understand, and accept my arguments, including all Objectivists I know and several other people I've always admired.

But, and I regret it, the last laugh is mine.  What I am talking about here involves a real and live threat to the United States.  Iran is on the axis of evil for a reason.  Bush is pandering to the Europeans, all of whom have US security as the last priority on their list.

Oh well.  What can a girl do?
