Title: ABCNews.com: Double bash headline special
Post by: mens_issues on Jun 07, 2004, 04:34 PM
Two of the three main "headlines" in ABCNews.com today promulgate the wage-gap myth and insult fathers.

One is titled "Pay Snub: Why do most women earn less than men?"

http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/Business/US/wages_gap_040607-1.html

The other is titled:  "Daddy Knows Best? One father says he was accused
http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/Living/US/mental_illness_treatment_kids_040607-1.html

As a bonus, I got to see a pop-up ad from Honda with the caption "My husband was raised by wolves."  Sounds familiar.  :banghead:

Regarding the article above.
- They have one anecdotal story about how a woman made less than her husband when he joined later.

There are many things in this story which are not defined. Is he working a different shift than her? Does he have extra duties which she does not. Does she have extra benefits which are already applied to him so he does not need to get benefits from the company?

However, discrepancies exist when these professions are looked at by gender. The median earnings for men who are doctors and surgeons are $140,000, compared with $88,000 for women. Similarly, male dentists' median earnings are $110,000, while female dentists' median earnings are $68,000. Among chief executives, men's median earnings are $95,000, while women's are $60,000.

There are multiple reasons why this is the case, maybe more men own their own practices or are shareholders in their own. Maybe they have different specializations. Broad generalizations regarding salaries do not take into account that a doctor with 20 years experience will be making more money than a doctor with 5 years experience.

Why are companies moving and outsourcing over to india? To make money. If this is true of most companies wanting to make money, why would they hire a male who would in the long run cost them 1.31 the amount of a female employee.

These numbers do not take into account the number of years experience, or the same job / duties. To calculate the wage gap they really need to look at two people doing the same job, and starting around the same time. Look at their employment history, amount of overtime work, amount of work missed, etc.. They need to really look at it on a more personal level, not broad generalizations.

They consider full time workers anyone who works more than 35 hours a week. They also consider a person working 60 hours a week full-time. How can those numbers be balanced.

Is it a wonder no one questioned why, say, an average male dentist would earn so much more than the average female dentist when both presumably are self-employed? That's research?

<<Is it a wonder no one questioned why, say, an average male dentist would earn so much more than the average female dentist when both presumably are self-employed?>>

Good question - and a question that will be ignored.

Actually ... I wonder who is smarter between a male physician who busts his butt in a practice in a specialty that will make bucks, but isn't so much fun, or his physician wife who works part time or at least fewer hours in the field she'd rather be in, but without the stress --- with the SAME lifestyle (because she's married to the physician busting his butt).  I get the drift that she's got the better end of the bargain - smart on her part.

As long as women are making different choices, sometimes because women tend to marry UP and thus have the higher lifestyle, and may not be motivated to be the producer, these "inequalities" will ALWAYS exist.

Which is great for feminists.  They are never going to run out of things to complain about.

What sense does it make to marry down? If we marry up (hard to do in some cases, I'd say, but then I don't know what your criteria are) then we benefit more than people marrying down do.

You are saying women marry up and men marry down? And then you would like to have it that men are the SMARTER sex??

Incautious.   (http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/happy/713.gif)

When did I say that?  Got links?

Women are clearly the smarter sex when it comes to that kind of thing.  I've always thought that.

There should be heavy affirmative action for men in that regard.

Men marry for emotional reasons, women can too but the first criteria is what his job/bankaccount/material status is all about. When that is established they look at the person second. Are men stupid for this? maybe, but I think this is a trend that is coming to a close as men are much more reluctant to marry these days. The smart thing would be to marry a woman who is self sufficient and has no qualms about siging a pre nep. If this means she doesnt want him for all the bogus reasons most women spout when a pre nep is presented, I say ditch her and keep looking.

You are right that women are much smarter in that regard and affirmative action for men would be a great idea. When men start realizing that they are their own worst enemies when they ignore the obvious in regards to societies gender biases, the twisted court system and lack of due process for men, life will become very simple and more pleasurable to live. Women are not the only thing god gave men to enjoy, theres always beer, nachos and baseball. :D

I've run into a few guys who have married women making substantially more than them - but most of them eventually got divorced.

Women clearly kick butt in that department - maybe feminists should embrace that more - it would be empowering.  They tend to play that down or ignore that something like that even exists for some reason.

Nice to see you Pernicious.  :)

I think the phrases "marry up" and "marry down" are loaded.

My wife married up financially however I married up spiritually, personality-wise, etc.  :D

There are a whole lot of dimensions to the up or down. We both benefited and we both married up and married down depending on which categories you consider.

They are tied to their own propaganda in that regard, Galt. To admit women are kicking butt in the income brackets would make their house of cards tumble to the ground.

Maybe Ms. Magazine should show profiles of Mrs. Walton or Mrs. Gates or the like and then show feminists pumping their fists in the air in a display of empowered solidarity.

I know - because then they have a slight problem with the "wage gap" thing and other statistics.  So keep it under your hat.

They have a problem establishing credibility amoung their own these days if you read the Ms boards before their demise. What exactly are these women rooting for, does anyone know?

<<What exactly are these women rooting for, does anyone know?>>

My idea - with regard to the Ms. Boards - is that a part of feminism today is simply "spoiled-brat" feminism.

Women came on there and suggested ways of lying to a father (who was paying for college but didn't really want to throw out good money for women's studies).  A woman asked if she should lie about being raped to coerce a professor into not to show a certain film in Russian Studies class - anything to get your way (Wyzardess).  A woman came on there and wanted sympathy for cheating and SIMULTANEOUSLY sympathy for being cheated on (Shy_Ms_Kitty).  And got it.  And talked about wailing on the ground, screaming and crying after reading an e-mail.  I mean - wouldn't you like be a bit embarrassed to say that, even if it was true.  Unreal.

And on and on, ad nauseum.

There were some older, bitter women there and a whole lot of young spoiled brats.  They seem to think that men get everything handed to them on a silver platter, and they are perpetually pissed-off.  That's modern-day feminism.  How cool.

It's brainwashing through women's studies (that YOU, as a taxpayer, are paying for) and many other routes in society.  They are perpetual victims.  With no empathy for men, whatsoever.

wow, you sure have that place down solid! I also noticed it was saturated with mostly MEN and no women! Trannys, gay men, mostly. I also noticed there were many lesbians which lends itself to why people tend to believe feminism equals lesbian/bi-butch/misandrist.

I don't think that there is a "smarter" or "better" sex.  It's just that men and women have different and complementary areas of strengths and weaknesses.  It isn't helpful to say that one is better than the other.

Also, how do you define marrying "up?"  Traditionally, women would want to marry men with more financial resources than they have, while men would want to marry women who are younger and attractive.  So, in terms of beauty, men also wanted to marry "up."

Of course, the fact that men on average earned more says nothing of how the money was spent.  If the money was given to the wife to spend for the family, everyone benefited.  It worked both ways, as while the wife may have made many of the purchasing decisions, the family as a whole benefited.  Therefore, the feminist whining about a misleading "pay gap" serves no purpose.   :blahblah:  :boohoo:

"You are saying women marry up and men marry down?"

Men usually have more money then the women they marry hence the term 'marrying down.'

I'd not take that assertion from that.  What I might take from that is that perhaps men are the more romantic sex, as they care less about status of potential mates.

I agree.  But JK knows too much about life to be romantic.
