True, a man can raise a child just as well as a woman can, but isn't it also true that women don't have the same chance of survival as men do in a crisis situation with men?  We have thousands of years of human history to prove that women stand little chance when competing directly with men for survival.  With that in mind, I think it's a very honorable thing for a man to step aside and give a woman a chance she would not otherwise have had.  The only problem I have with chivalry is when it is expected of men instead of simply desired of them, or as in your case of opening doors, when it's extended exclusively to women without a reasonable basis for excluding men.

I'm just trying to get an idea of what the men's movement has to offer by way of solutions to the problems men and boys face.  But alas, with all due respect, it seems to have none.  It's as if this whole men's lobbying versus women's lobbying is a case of a dog chasing its tail, or perhaps more appropriately, Dan's illustration of two crabs pulling each other into a bucket.  In the end, both crabs get fried.  I see the same future for gender activists on either side of the coin.

What I'm gathering from this discussion is the general opinion that men and women will never live together in perfect harmony.

So the men's movement can be likened to a struggle for survival?

Of what value is fighting if, whether you fight or not, there is never to be peace?

At what point does the men's movement declare "Mission Accomplished" and close up shop?

Talking about picking apart gender/fluids?

Could we not be more complaining against him and her and and just plain who cares?

1/10

Geez, you're not even a good troll.  What makes trolls think they're focus, level-headed sages?

Don't they even notice that they're trolls?

The trolls on Battle.net are funny.  Why can't you be like them?  I see them at least get a 7/10 usually.

Who here knows anything about Katha Pollitt?

Read one thing by her.  Pissed me off.  Want to know more before denouncing her as evil.

Let's party!  Women have an array of stress responses that we men just don't have.  Let's celebrate!

...meanwhile...

Let's ignore this kid's begezuzload of warning signs that he's going to do something bad.  Don't get him help or anything.

Oh he's just a boy.  He'll internalize his issues and go shoot himself.  Then we can celebrate the greater longevity of women!

You'll never see a girl do this.  Girls are good people.  She'll go team up with her girlfriends and put up the impenetrable grrl-power shield!  Woot!

----

And a sidenote for those of you that have children:  DO NOT EVER TEACH YOUR CHILD TO SEEK HELP FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHEN YOUR CHILD SEES ANOTHER PERSON BEHAVING STRANGELY.  THAT IS BAD, BAD, NOT GOOD.  IT WILL ONLY LEAD TO TROUBLE.  IT'S VERY NAUGHTY AND YOU WILL HAVE YOUR HANDS SMACKED FOR IT.  THAT WOULD BE EMBARRASSING, NOW WOULDN'T IT?

Just make fun of the wacko a little and he'll go away (he'll take ten or so people with him, but it's a small price to pay).

----

Sorry.  My blood is boiling at the moment.  I honestly think this could have been avoided if someone had shown a little initiative.

We spend so much time showing off how tough we are (ex. feminists) that we overlook the not-so-tough that could really use a hand but are too messed up in the head to ask for it.

Perhaps boys just realize sooner that it's not worth the effort.

I don't think this means women are less corrupt.

Maybe, just maybe, perhaps, by some far stretch of imagination...

...this means the presence of women makes men better men...

???

Maybe?

God forbid we were actually meant to work together or something...

I suggest finding a woman that you like to be around and deciding that your job is to make her so happy that she won't want to be anywhere else.   Every day, do something to make her happy.  One flower, one chocolate, one card, take out the garbage.........just do something she likes.

This doesn't happen in reality.  One of the most important things to be understood in a relationship is that the other person can't always be there to make you feel "special," and especially not every day.

The spoil him/her approach just burns you out.
