"The presence of gender bias among reviewers also has been debated. In 1990, Lloyd (46) conducted an experiment in which she requested reviews of identical manuscripts with authors' names that were obviously male or female. In this relatively small cohort, female-authored manuscripts were accepted significantly more often by female reviewers (62%) than by male reviewers (21%). Male reviewers did not discriminate between male- or female-authored manuscripts in terms of acceptance rate (20-30%). Female reviewers were also significantly less likely to accept the male version of the paper (10%) compared with the female version (62%). "

So much for scientific objectivism.

Main / Don't let your ex trash your credit

They should have called this article, "How to leave Hubby with all of the debts  in his name".

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/CollegeAndFamily/SuddenlySingle/DontLetYourExTrashYourCredit.aspx?GT1=8790

Notice how the husband is called irresponsible (and it's all his fault), even though it's entirely possible that he simply can no longer afford to pay off the debt (after all, his credit is getting trashed too).

Divorce has turned into an art form.

Main / Judge orders deadbeat dad to wear sign

A few weeks ago I was reading the details of the US Constitution (I'm British), and I noticed a clause in the 8th Amendment forbidding "cruel and unusual punishments". Wikipedia has some information on it ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruel_and_unusual ).

Anyway, as far as I see, this Judge has ignored the US Constitution. Perhaps zarby might be able to comment since I'm not a lawyer.

WABASH, Ind. -- A judge ordered that a man who has failed to pay child support must spend his days sitting in a county building's lobby under a sign reading "I don't support my kids."

Wabash Circuit Judge Robert McCallen III said he imposed the sentence against Michael Booth, 33, of Wabash not as a special punishment, but to avoid adding to the overcrowding of the county jail.
The judge cited Booth for contempt of court, but said he would release Booth from sitting under the sign once he begins working at a job or shows he is making a sufficient attempt to find one.
Booth could not be located for comment as no home telephone number was listed in his name.

I often read conspiracy theories - usually just for entertainment.

However, this one seems plausible and well worth reading. It claims that the evidence that HIV causes AIDs is highly questionable. They have some very good sources. Make up your own mind:

Main / Israeli shop opens only to women

Much like affirmative action, discrimation is okay as long as men are the victims.

I note that there isn't a single negative remark about this in the BBC article. If it were a men's only shop, I'm sure they would have found a negative quote from a woman's rights organisation (just for "balance").

It's pretty easy to see what the BBC's view on abortion is after reading this article. Notice how the article is filled with quotes from various pro-abortion groups. There is not a single quote from a pro-life group.

Ever heard "if women ruled the world there would be no war"? ;)

The JRA were arguably the most ruthless terrorists in the world.

"There were other terrorists from middle-class rich countries back then, like the Baader-Meinhof Faction in (1970s West) Germany and (1980s Italy) Red Brigades. But compared to Fusako's JRA, these Euro-trash terrorists were squeamish dilettantes. Unlike the JRA, they didn't usually target civvies, and settled for the odd kidnap, picking off an official or two per year just to keep in practice. They cared more about the ideological crap than action.

The craziest of all was their leader, a woman named Fusako Shigenobu-a pioneer in blasting the glass ceiling for women as CEOs of terror gangs. "

So much for submissive japanese women...
