�� The highest number of 50,531 inmates (49,410 male : 1,121 female) were reported from
Uttar Pradesh (15.5%) followed by Bihar 37,323 (36,274 male : 1,049 female) at the end
of the year 2003.
�� D&N Haveli reported the highest overcrowding of prisons (344.0%) followed by Delhi
(305.3%) while the least occupancy was reported from Lakshadweep (6.3%) followed by
Daman & Diu (27.5%).
�� 339 Women Convicts with their 334 children and 1,132 Women undertrials with their
1,131 children were reported in the country.
�� Maximum number of 12,780 (12,235 male : 545 female) Convicts were reported from
Madhya Pradesh (13.9% of total convicts in the country) followed by Maharashtra 8,215
(7,825 male : 390 female) accounting for 8.9% of the total convicts at the end of the year
2003.
�� The highest number of Graduate and Post Graduate Convicts were reported from Punjab
(648) and Uttar Pradesh (137) respectively at the end of the year 2003.
�� Murder alone accounted for 58.6% of the total Convicts under IPC Crimes. The highest
number of 6,909 Murder Convicts were reported from Madhya Pradesh (15.0% of total
Murder convicts) followed by Maharashtra (9.2% of total Murder convicts) at the end of
the year 2003.
�� The highest percentage (28.3%) of undertrials were charged with Murder. Among States,
Bihar reported the highest number of 7,680 Undertrials (16.5%) followed by Uttar Pradesh
7,286 (15.6%).
�� 333 Convicts including 4 Women were awaiting execution in the country at the end of the
year 2003.
�� 48,334 Convicts were undergoing sentences for Life Imprisonment accounting for 52.7%
of total Convicts in the country at the end of the year 2003.
�� 1,481 Undertrials (0.7% of total undertrials) were detained in jails for more than 5 years at
the end of the year 2003.
�� 16,798 Convicts were habitual offenders which accounted for 7.3% of total convicts
admitted during the year.
�� The highest earning by inmates trained in various vocational programmes was reported
from Maharashtra (Rs.1,398.2 lakh) followed by Bihar (Rs.652.9 lakh) during the year
2003.
�� The highest earning per inmate was reported from Maharashtra (Rs.5,843.1) followed by
Gujarat (Rs.5,267.0) as against All-India average of Rs.1,392.1 during the year 2003.
�� Out of the total 50,787 staff manning jails in the country, 2,806 (i.e. 5.5%) were women
during the year 2003.
�� The highest expenditure per inmate was reported from Manipur (Rs.71,992.2) as against
All-India average of Rs.11,901.3 during the year 2003-04.
