In Internet terminology, a troll is someone who comes into an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude, repetitive or offensive messages designed intentionally to annoy and antagonize the existing members or disrupt the flow of discussion, including the personal attack of calling others trolls.

Then read. The problem is that first Gonzo came up with an illogical, fictional scenario to justify the man walking hands-free while his wife carries a huge bundle. And then that slided off into CaptDMO intentionally "misunderstanding" my words for no other purpose other than being provocative.

Illogical and fictional, Troll-boy?  How much time you spent in a 3rd world country?

Spoiled city-boys like yourself have a great deal of leisure to talk about how all that is un-necessary, but let me tell you, spend even a summer there sometime, and you'll see just what a jackass you are being.

Fact of the matter is, the old "Wild West" that some shitheels are fond of citing as near anarchy is the height of civilization.  You hang your clothes up at night to make sure a snake don't crawl into them.  Shake your boots out.  All kinds of animals aren't afraid of you, including the damn apes, and will kill you for entering their territories - or do you think those fast moving jeeps in Wild Kingdom are just for "coolness?"

And this shit is in you back yard.  Get a pack of hyenas come into the village, and the easiest thing to do is close the doors and sit them out.  Unless someone has a gun.  If the bandits or the government haven't confiscated it.

Tell me - why is his wife carrying the load while he has his hands free with a stick?  Sexism?  Tradition?  Where do you think the tradition comes from?  Ever seen guards on a armored car?  Escorts for a military convoy?  Why aren't they toting the barge or lifting the bale?  Lazy?  Oppressors?

Or maybe - gosh, here's a thought - just maybe, they are unencumbered and have their hands free so that if they need to do something quickly they don't have to stop - unburden themselves - draw a weapon - then face the danger, and can just immediately proceed to the last step?  No?

Ever walked point?  Did they have you carry a pack, or just the weapon?  Hmmmmm.

What's your scenario, then?

How much time YOU spent in Africa? What degree do you have in Cultural Anthropology?

Yeah.  Thought so.  Thanks for playing.

I guess when our resident "big bad motherfucker" Gonzo spouts endless personal insults, which he had been using long before I called him and the captain trolls, it's perfectly acceptable.

Because quod licet Iovi non licet bovi.

Gonzo is like Samuel White Baker.

I already responded to this by asking "is he going to wrestle the lion?"
Make the lion hyenas. Who cares.

You may have a point though, if wild animals really are such a threat.

Although Tim Stafford didn't mention the men carrying rifles, and what else is going to protect you from a lion or a pack of hyenas? Your bare fists? A knife?

It might even be the case that Mr Tim Stafford didn't report instances of men carrying huge bundles on their back while their wife was walking alight, because he thought of that as "normal".

Anyway, there was no need to get frothing at the mouth over that.
The argument is pointless.

If you can point out a personal insult there, by all means, continue to accuse the Docotr of having Double standards after you've already been warned once today.  You ain't been round here long, have you?

Ooh.  He quotes LATIN too.  Because quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur.

Lion 'devours' young lover

The stats I've found suggest something around a couple hundred people a year are killed by wild animals in Africa.

There are 720 million people in Africa.

Let's exagerate and say 720 people are killed in Africa by wild animals. 29 of them in Kenya.

That means out of a population of 29 _million_ 29 people are killed by wild animals.

One out of every million.

BTW, the author of the article clearly stated "walking stick" not rifle, knife or blunt weapon. Further if it was a western man and a western woman, the man would be carrying the burden, could we then conclude *she* was protecting *him*?

Some cultures treat women like crap. Just like our culture treats men like crap. It happens. It may be that, in Kenya, it's the *woman's* duty to provide for the family while the man preforms some (now defunct) spiritual service as well as hunting for the (now nonexistant) tribe as a whole.

Not every culture conceptualizes the male-female relationship like we do.

D

How about an interview with the people he cited?  Did they even ask them why they were doing what they wrer doing?  They just kind of hypothesised.

CaptDMO

We're targeting women and their children because men will probably just......

Strangely, there's no mention of what they're doing to reverse that plight of men, and ultimately, if successful, the plight of women and children.

Then again, there's the "Heres some outdated baby formula that's now against the law to sell in first world countries due to questionable ingredents , now do what we tell you to do. Smile for the camera and try to look pathetic, you're going to be on late night television in the West.

Why do I get the feeling that, Like Donald Trump and Wollman(sp?) Skating rink, once the Gates/Buffet charities gather more traction, without "charitable" parasites or "official" managing departments, assigned an "operating expense" at every step before the intended recipient sees a grain, that these charities will become superceded and obsolete on a massive scale. Tangeble and broad results will suddenly be evident, unlike cancer "research" or ANYTHING that the United Way touches.

Next time a group claiming "charitable" intentions asks for cash, ask them to see the spread sheet of disbursments. In the U.S. these must be provided on request or lose tax status.  The first time you hear the expression "Er...", walk away-knowing you didn't just buy the tax free, all expenses, vacation to a "trouble spot" for some "charitable" group officer.

Any word yet on how much recovery for the women and children of Hurricane Katrina, or ESPECIALLY the (more affected) women and children victims of the tsunami that hit Phucket have benifited from the millions in personally donated cash, as well as the first world tax funded
"assistance" that could have bought them all Humvees has gone? NO?
Any word on how the (all inclusive) people have had their lives completely
restored ? NO?

How about the ever expanding four star vacation hotels that were merely damaged? I guess the women and children must be living in them by now!

The good news is the labor of restoring New Orleans has commensed. The workmen have begun the cleanup and restoraation. And those newly employed workmen are from........?

There was a "Katrina" drive by the Red Cross in my town. The funds were
to be "specificly for aid the victims of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans", if the donor requested it. The Red Cross doesn't work that way, but due to
fraud by other National, and ESPECIALLY- world "charities" (UN comes to mind) this provision is law. I just handed them a check and said "non-specific". The local volunteers for a day looking to get their picture in the paper (*sigh* OK-whatever it takes!) were instantly confused. The full time Red Cross folk just nodded, grinned,  and said thank you, looked at the check and said woooooah....THANK YOU!
(Well, I had to get SOME sort of self serving ego boost vainglory out of this story ;))

The Red Cross is one of precious few organisations that I'm willing to
support wirth cash. I know how they work. They're not perfect but they're
head and shoulders above the rest.  The Salvation Army is another, I know the results of THEIR work first hand, from a time when I had NO reason to brag about much.
