Experts are shocked people from across the globe have been sending mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik letters during his time in solitary confinement.
The terms of his custody in Ila Prison prohibit any contact with the outside world. Letters come from females such as Christians who wish to heal him, women playing the mother's role, and even those who support of him.
Prison Director Knut Bjarkeid and police lawyer Pål-Fredrik Hjort Kraby do not wish to comment on the matter. However, Professor of Psychology, Frode Thuen, tells VG he is "stunned", alleging the women who write such letters need some form of help.
"There is every reason to believe that these are quite misguided and deranged women who struggle with themselves. They often have a kind of notion that they can make a difference, a desire for a type of healing, salvation and care. They think they should get him on back on track and take some sort of responsibility for his rehabilitation."
Other experts are slightly puzzled. There is little research why some members of the public wish to contact a mass murderer.
"This is nothing new. There are some women attracted to criminals who have committed extreme acts, like rape and murder. In this case, perhaps it had something to do with his appearance as well. It is not known what lies behind this attraction to radical men," says Psychologist and sexologist Thore Langfeldt.
Meanwhile, Kjell Arnold Nyhus, Chaplain for Hamar and Ilseng Prisons is not surprised after working behind jailhouse walls for some years.
"There are so many different people in society verging on madness that could think of doing something like this. [Nevertheless] many of these women have no prior association with drug-related or criminal environments, but still fall for chronic criminals," he says.
Shocking? Hey, the
experts are shocked. What kind of "expert" is that? Should be old news. For a long time it has been known that violent criminals get a lot of female admirers.
Erin Pizzey's, "
Prone to violence", also makes the point that some women actively seek violent men and often are themselves violent.
Maybe allowing the book to be published a few "experts" may have been less puzzled.
Wikipedia is not too bad:
n her book Prone to Violence (
full text available online) Pizzey has argued that many of the women who took refuge had a personality such that they sought abusive relationships. Pizzey describes such behaviour as akin to addiction. She speculates that high levels of hormones and neurochemicals associated with pervasive childhood trauma lead to adults who repeatedly engage in violent altercations with intimate partners despite the physical, emotional, legal and financial costs, in unwitting attempts to simulate the emotional impact of traumatic childhood experiences. The book contains numerous stories of disturbed families alongside a discussion of the reasons why the modern state care-taking agencies are largely ineffective.
Some internet sources make the claim that Prone to Violence was suppressed by feminists, citing a 1996 search of all libraries in the world that could be accessed from the US Library of Congress through the Inter-Library Network that allegedly revealed a total of only thirteen listings worldwide. A 2010 WorldCat search shows that at least 43 libraries in the world hold the book.[12]
Pizzey says it was after death threats against her, her children, her grandchildren, and the killing of her dog, all of which she states were perpetrated by feminist activists, [13][14] that she left England for North America. She returned to London in the 1990s where her insights were sought by politicians and family pressure groups.n her book Prone to Violence (full text available online) Pizzey has argued that many of the women who took refuge had a personality such that they sought abusive relationships.
