Cop wins damages in mailbox porn suit

CHICAGO - A police officer who said hard-core pornography was left in her mailbox every day for six months after she became the first and only woman on an undercover gang unit was awarded $150,000 in damages in her harassment lawsuit.

"I told the jury exactly what happened, and the Chicago Police Department, including one commander, one captain, two lieutenants and seven sergeants, all tried to say I wasn't telling the truth, and the jury saw through it," Ann McDermott said outside court.

The federal jury on Monday also ordered the city to pay $500,000 in legal fees for McDermott's lawyers.

The police department's internal affairs unit had dismissed most of McDermott's complaints, but police spokeswoman Monique Bond said investigators will now revisit the case.

McDermott, a former teacher, joined the force in 1997. She asked to join the undercover gang unit, becoming the only woman on an eight-officer team. McDermott testified that starting the first day -- and every day for six months -- she found porn in her mailbox.

When she complained, McDermott said, she was tagged a "beefer," a term used for officers who report fellow officers. She said she transferred to another district but the porn continued.

McDermott went back to work Tuesday night but said she still feels like a pariah.

"Five to six years later, people still don't talk to me, still don't trust me," she said. "People look at you like you have five eyes. Nobody talks to you. It's very lonely."

She won't. At the first sign of danger, she will push her fellow officers to the front, let them get shot, get in the cruiser and make her escape to a cushy desk job with a Purple Heart for her act of bravery.

That's not just ribbing.  Six months of daily mail that is designed to tell her she doesn't belong isn't just a joke it's a clear cut message.

Complain that women don't put their lives on the line on one hand, then do everything to make their lives miserable if they do.

No problem

Then don't complain about the ratio regarding dangerous jobs.

Don't complain that men are injuried and killed on the job site more then women. If you don't stand a chance within the job then you don't stand a chance to get hurt.

They busted her the same way they would a guy who they didn't want (faggot). It happens, and I except that. Work is not grade school though, they shouldn't have acted in a grade school manner.

RAF typist who hurt thumb is awarded eight times more than soldier who lost leg

An RAF typist who injured her thumb at work is to be paid almost half a million pounds by the Ministry of Defence.

The civilian's award is almost 30 times the amount a serviceman would receive for the same injury.

It is eight times more than a soldier would receive for losing a leg and almost double the amount he could expect if he lost both legs.

The 484,000 payout was condemned by former soldiers, politicians and servicemen's charities who fear it will severely damage morale.

The woman, believed to be in her 20s, developed a repetitive strain injury while typing computer data.

She claimed it left her unable to work and caused her to become depressed, and she started legal action against the MoD.

She sued the MoD and it was revealed that she was awarded a total of 484,000 in compensation and associated costs.

Legal sources estimated that her total costs for the action would be unlikely to amount to more than 50,000, meaning she would pocket about 434,000.

This dwarfs the sums offered to serving members of the armed forces who could expect a one-off payment of just 16,500 for the same injury.

It is almost double the 285,000 a soldier can expect if he loses two limbs while fighting for his country.

The official tariff of compensation for injuries lists 28,750 for someone blinded in one eye; 57,500 for the loss of a leg and just 8,250 for injuries associated with surviving a gunshot wound.

Serving military personnel operate under what are called Queen's Regulations.

Under these rules they give up certain rights normally available to British employees.

MoD personnel are employed under civilian working laws which make suing for compensation easier

... But really, who would want to work with the likes of these whom go round expecting a free something on account of their sex but not for the quality of their work anyway ?

Hmm seems women gets special protection from ribbing because they are women. What about small men or runty men or men who don't see eye to eye with the rest of team? A lot of people get ribbed all the time but certain groups have no recourse. There is no special protection for them. They don't have some distinct physical attribute like having a uterus or a distinct lifestyle like being gay.

This always reminds me of the Marines. The Marines go out of their way to give small, weak, runty and wimpy men a hard time, harder than the rest of the privates, to drum them out. They drum out the weak. But they can't do this with women because women get special protection. But be a small guy or a runty guy and even the women back driving you out. Its wrong to say women can't make the grade but OK when a man should be drummed out cause of lack of size, strength, fortitude etc. I happen to think that is the way it should be and women should also be driven out if they can't hack things.

Sorry but other groups have to deal with ribbing, ridicule and bullying all the time and they DON'T have a recourse and no special victim group identity to lay claim to. Try being a wimpy guy and see where you go for help? No group to indentify with. Just a minority of 1.

This always infuriates me that some people can just lay claim to being part of some "victim group" to gain special attention and others abused can do nothing. I've also noticed that the groups that THINK they are the biggest victims are the first to completely ignore the plight of others, especially others that don't belong to a distinct group of people. Kind of like its so wrong to give women a hard time but go ahead and make fun of the fat person or small person or runty guy.

I happen to be 100% behind driving women out of a team situation like this. Its not that I don't think women can do the job. On the contrary they are grey people like all the rest of us. Women have an undying need to be accepted and will do ANYTHING to be the group that throws stones instead of the person getting stoned. That means stepping on anyone else they can discredit, demean and trample to be part of the crowd. They will also stand silently by while the teams commits evil soley because they want to belong. Trouble is I and other men are usually the ones they step on to get their acceptance. They do everything from flirting to pitting one guy against another to outright faking being mad or hurt to suck up chivalry from the group and become the center of attention. I say good riddence. Apparently women think there are some men who are just toilet paper to be used. I say we men should take that away from women. You don't help us when guys like us are the bottom of the barrel so why should us same guys help women? I'm not a step stool.

I'm with both sides of the debate here. Everyone wishes people were less animalistic in the workforce, but on the other hand, this rabid competitiveness is a crucial component.

There's a team (not a police team) I'm in right now, and I've spent the last year stepping up to the plate, to every challenge, proving I'm easily as good as they are. You have to know your teammate has your back, they have to know you have theirs, and it's necessary that everyone knows their teammates are up to the task and can be relied on with your life. I demand that from my teammates, it's a natural balance that they demand in return. Of course, in the beginning, there was endless ribbing and practical jokes and attempts to drive me out because I was new and inexperienced and this was an older team. You can earn respect, or you can take it.

She could have simply dropped the porn in a bin, no need to look at it. That would have been one way of stepping up to the challenge. Getting upset about it might be understandable (she could have religious reasons etc) but still she shouldn't be in that job if she caves in to intimidation like that. All newbies get it. Plenty of women before her have probably put up with similar in order to become policewomen. All the men have to. It's just the 'new-boy' tradition, you have to prove your worth rather than just claim it. I like it, pretty much because I have to prove myself over others who want whatever job we're competing for, and I know I can prove I'm the better candidate.

It's time to complain and worry when, as they are doing with our schools, it becomes a game of reducing everyone to the lowest possible common average. Then there will be less ribbing, and less competition, because everyone will be useless and intellectually comatose. That is about the only way I can see us ending up in some version of a  peaceful Utopia. Horrible thought.
The above is the individual opinion of shiva. Unless stated otherwise, it's just an opinion; please do not confuse with a certified expert's individual opinion.

Did she get this BEFORE she was "given a chance?" Or was it after it became clear she was an affirmative-action, token-woman type?

The answer to those questions is the point.

And when one joins an established team, it becomes one's task to fit in - not the established team's task to be welcoming or accomodating.

I agree. Did she earn the position or was she just shoved onto the team in the name of affirmative action? Isn't it amazing how people react when they are forced in some way or another to accept something or someone through no choice of their own. I bet she could have made it into the team on merit and they would have accepted her especially since an undercover woman cop would be valuable. But I'm betting the affirmative action fairy had something to do with this and that is being left out of the dialog.

Again. Another reason I can't stand women in some work environments. They don't earn their way, they get handed their way and all the rest of us are immediatly labelled villains and bludgeoned with the guilt bat if we don't accept. And all we get for our troubles is "ah ah ah ah poor baby". I wonder how many guilt trip speaches, demands these guys accept, shaming and name calling tactics were used on the team flat out before she even arrived to get the men to accept her.

No matter how good carrots are people will hate carrots when you shove them down their throats.
