Tell me Ashcroft doesn't know better.  I'm dissappointed this administration is giving lip service to the one-sided treatment of DV.

ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT CHALLENGES MEN TO TAKE THE PLEDGE TO DEFEAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General John Ashcroft today announced the release of a Justice Department-sponsored public service announcement (PSA) challenging men from all walks of life to help join the fight in eliminating domestic violence. The 30 second and 15 second PSAs are designed to air during the month of October commemorating "Domestic Violence Awareness Month," although additional versions of the PSA without the tagline noting October's designation are also being made available to run past this month.

"Domestic violence is wrong and destroys the lives of far too many women and children. I'm challenging men across America to take the pledge against domestic violence. We must work together to eliminate the horrific cycle of violence," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "This public service announcement demonstrates the Bush Administration's unceasing commitment to keep families safe, hold offenders accountable, and bring communities together in our ongoing efforts to end domestic violence."

The PSA, which features Attorney General John Ashcroft, John Lynch of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, U.S. Air Force Colonel Will Gunn, and others to encourages men to pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence. Information about the pledge, as well as a digital version of the PSA, is available at www.takethepledge.gov.

"When domestic violence is ignored, thousands of women and their families' lives are at risk," said Office on Violence Against Women Director Diane M. Stuart. "Women and their families deserve to live safe and healthy lives, free of violence. We encourage everyone to support this effort."

At a White House event earlier today, President Bush signed a proclamation declaring the month of October as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month." The President announced two important initiatives, the Justice Department's Family Justice Center Initiative and the Department of Health and Human Services' Safe and Bright Futures for Children Initiative. The Justice Department will lead a $20 million-dollar program to develop comprehensive domestic violence victim service and support centers in 12 communities across the country.

This unprecedented pilot program, the President's Family Justice Center Initiative, will make victims' search for help and justice easier by bringing professionals who provide an array of necessary services together under one roof. In addition, the President announced the release of a new Stop Family Violence postage stamp from which the proceeds will help victims of domestic violence.

What the hell?? Screw Ashcroft. I censure  this bullshit DV month. And Bush needs to prove his conservatism. This is the kind of spineless shit that gets republicans into trouble and one of the reasons I reject their party. We need to get rid of all phony politicians.

We must not make the mistake of thinking that all those who eat the bread of dictatorship are evil from the first; but they must necessarily become evil....The curse of a system of terror is that there is no turning back; neither in the large realm of policies nor the 'smaller' realm of everyday human relationships is it possible for men to retrace their steps."

Can you say " bureaucracy"?

Wow, maintaining the status quo much?

I'd write to Ashcroft to complain, but the last thing I need right now is that guy on my ass.

By the way I noticed how they downplayed the "forcing the attacker to pay penalties", ie go to jail or suffer otherwise.  Since their campaign is clearly one sided.

I can only imagine the suffering that will come from this in the years to follow.  It doesn't seem to matter who you vote for, it's all the same shit.

I like this poster from the site:

I couldn't resist.  I had to e-mail them to find out more-

To Whom It May Concern,
Given the fact that studies repeatedly show that domestic violence is perpetrated almost equally among the sexes, I have to say that I was surprised that your site has absolutely no resources for male victims.  I doesn't even mention them in any publications.  Ignoring that fact that men can be victims too further perpetuates the societal pressure on men to not seek help.  Who does that help?  A suit was recently filed in Los Angeles by a man who was denied access to a shelter simply by virtue of his gender!  There are obviously a lot of men who would benefit from these resources and yet the government ignores them.  I would appreciate some explanation with regard to the DOJ strategy in omitting men(half of the population) from these resources.  I look forward to your reply.

I wonder if Ashcroft read this:  http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/entertainment/article.adp?id=20031022114309990001   If that doesn't work for non-aol users I'll get another one.

Nice letter, Bilbo, the most likely response will be 49%, men are only 49%.

You just need to send a list of "keywords" at the bottom of your message to make sure it gets the proper attention.

Good keywords:

Pipe bomb, murder president, kill Ashcroft, ricin, anthrax, cessium, airplane bombing, free porn.  <-- Every geek likes free porn.

They have an automated system which scans all emails sent to them looking for "threatening" key words and checks their proximity to other certain keyboards.  If you don't include keywords it's highly unlikely your email will go anywhere other than /dev/null
