First off, I can't even comprehend the evil that the mother and others did to this little girl. I can't even try to understand it.
But some things I'm already noticing about the media treatment of the case:
-Many women I've spoken with about it have stated (umprompted) that they believe the reason the mother did this was to get back at the father and deny him his daughter.
-This angle was brought up on the Today show momentarily by some commentator, but the Today show talking head immediately dismissed it and was adamantly against entertaining it as a possible motive.
-The media seems to be taking advantage of this case now as an opportunity to push more human trafficking and sex slavery mythology. Keep an eye out for this.
This is exactly what has been going on in the NY local news. I called it 5 seconds before they aired the story. Instead of focusing on the heinous thing the mother did, they decided to talk about the evils of human trafficking in general. Showing pictures of eastern European women stuffed in glove compartments and Mexicans being "liberated" from massage parlors.
Only once did they say anything about that mother. They pretty much held her up as just another example of widespread human trafficking. Almost like she was a victim of circumstance! Expect that too in the media.
I will say however that the talk in the street and in the trains are about lynching the mother. I haven't heard ONE person excuse or mitigate what she did. It shows me that the news has NO idea what's going on in the minds of America.
