Interesting to see Thailand in the top three (and Britain near the bottom):

Britain 'one of the worst countries for expats'

Britain has been voted one of the worst places in the world for expats to live with immigrants bemoaning the high cost of living and tedious daily commute.

People seeking a new life here have been left disenchanted as they struggle to get on the property ladder and endure worse accommodation than in their native countries.

Others complained that their health had deteriorated since moving to Britain, the world's largest study of expats found.

Almost half (49 per cent) of people said that the quality of food in the UK was worse than at home, while the British ratings for education and childcare, family life and the pursuit of hobbies were also significantly lower than international averages.

Despite Britain's strong record of assimilating waves of immigrants, we also ranked badly for integration, with just 34 per cent of expats saying they felt involved in local life.

One of this country's few saving graces is its standard of entertainment, with 58 per cent of settlers saying they had a better time out in Britain than back home.

Canada was rated as the best place to start afresh, followed by Australia and Thailand, while Britain languished fourth from the bottom of 26 countries - below Vietnam and China - despite being ranked highly for career prospects.

David Norton, head of customer propositions at HSBC Bank International, which commissioned the study of 3,000 expats from 50 countries, said it showed that migrants are driven by more than financial considerations.

"What is clear is that the locations where salaries may not be as high, such as Canada and Australia, are where expats are really enjoying not only an increased quality of life but are also finding it easy to fit in to their new communities," he said.

Figures released in February showed that 6.5 million people born overseas are resident in Britain, with the number of foreigners in the UK increasing by 290,000 over the last year.

But notable foreign expats in Britain yesterday leapt to the defence of their adopted country. Kathy Lette, the Australian author who now lives in London, said that British culture and humour were unequalled.

"The great thing about living here is that you have to conquer the great indoors. You have the best galleries and theatres of anywhere in the world," she said.

"The British are also incredibly witty. Wordplay is foreplay, and women like a man who can thrust with his rapier."

Patricia Yates of Visit Britain also dismissed the expats' criticisms of life in Britain as outdated, insisting that London's restuarants and pubilc transport are now among the best in the world.

"Of course we British are masters of diffidence and although we know how fortunate we are, we do not like to boast about what a great place this is to live, work and visit," she said.

The most popular destination for British expats is Australia, which is home to 1,300,000 Britons, ahead of Spain (761,000) and the United States (678,000).

According to the poll the only countries deemed less attractive to expats than Britain are India, Russia and Qatar.

If you are a crazy ex-pat with shyte for brains, then move to Toronto or anywhere in Ban-tario! However, if you are terminally stupid, Quebec wants you NOW!

BUT, if you want true quality of life, then move to the Nation of no2fembots in British Columbia.  Only 163 acres, but the neighbors - all 4 of us!!! - are nice and we are a gun-friendly zone!

I'll move to Australia if they give me my own supply of anti-venom. I'll even eat the Vegamite. Snakes, Funnel Spiders and huge jelly fish ... no thanks, mate!

Note that the survey was about which countries were best for expatriates according to a variety of factors, as opposed to what MRA's might be looking for e.g. a refuge from feminist misandry.

Hey what is the issue with Quebec? I see vendors in Canada who explicitely state they will not sell to people in Quebec.

As an expat Brit, I can understand why fellow Brits might choose Australia and Canada; the weather's awful in the UK, traffic's clogged up in most provincial towns and cities in the mornings and evenings, everything costs a fortune, you're going to be working fairly long hours and find it difficult to save money despite working hard.  Crime is a big problem too - a lot of aggressive people around (yep, plenty of aggressive women too - I know that's getting the case in other countries, but the UK seems to specialise in aggressive women).

Now Thailand - there's a place I can recommend! Cheap everything, fantastic (and cheap) medical care if you need it, beautiful, charming, unaggressive intelligent women,  good food and weather, good infrastructure, great service everywhere you go, great beaches.  Foreigner-friendly and easy to get visas here to live here semi-permanently / permanently.  What's to hate?

Thanks, SIAM.  Actually, I thought about you in Thailand when I saw the article, and figured you in particular would find it interesting.

From what I've seen on travel shows, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay look good.

From what I can tell, southern Brazil along the coast looks nice.  There is a city called Florianopolis that was rated the best place to live in that country.  I'd be wary of places like Sao Paulo or Rio De Janeiro, however.

Can one be an "ex pat" without even leaving the country?

I mean if you move off to some remote city in the mountains or in the desert or wherever isn't it somewhat the same thing?

It seems to me that you can avoid many of the problems that this board addresses by getting out and away from major population centers.

There is a county in Texas that has an estimated population of 42 (Loving County).  There are 52 counties in Texas with estimated populations less than 5,000.

I suspect the same is true in places like Nevada, Utah, Alaska, etc.

I spoke to a guy several years ago who was County Attorney of some West Texas County. He said they have three law enforcement officers in the whole county and they criminal docket call twice a year (often there are no cases on the docket call).  I just can't see many troubles in places like that unless you do something really bad.

Also, I cannot see too much feminist entitlement in places like that.

Sorry Isnt Good Enough

I currently reside in California's Imperial Valley, about 10 minutes by car from Mexicali, Baja California.  I plan to move even closer to the border once this lease runs out.  Hotter than hell in the summer, but not a bad spot to be overall.  Mexico has everything you need and a whole lot more!  Not as cheap as it used to be(prices for hotels and most mainline consumer goods seem to be lo mismo que el otro lado) but still great.

to the canuck above-what is wrong with Quebec?  I loved it the few times I went, still want to see Quebec City. I thought Montreal was leaps and bounds better than Toronto-and most cities in the U.S. for that matter...

I knew someone was going to write something like that.  You've probably got a better chance of seeing a unicorn than getting caught up in Mexican organized crime as an American tourist, but hey, be afraid, be very afraid.  Personally, I don't let thugs dictate where I go in the world, but that's just me.
