Lowest rate of female victims ever recorded:

In 2008, females accounted for the lowest proportion (24%) of homicide victims recorded since data collection began. There were 146 female victims in 2008, 17 fewer than in 2007. The rate of female victims has generally been declining since the late 1960s (Chart 9). This decline may be related to the decline in spousal homicide rates over the past 30 years, which usually involve female victims, as well as the fact that gang-related homicides, which usually involve male victims, have increased.

In 2008:

-   146 females were murdered in Canada.
-   817 females committed suicide.

-   465 males were murdered in Canada.
-   2,695 males committed suicide.

With all these numbers, which ones does everyone focus on

"-   146 females were murdered in Canada."

Another interesting data point is the male/female ratio in case of

murders: 3.19
suicides: 3.30

(rounded in the last digit)

I find this near-agreement of ratios to be fascinating: if men would be women-killing brutes, one would expect that men would off themselves in a much lower ratio. It seems that being male as opposed to female increases the chances of violent death independently of the killing is being done by someone else or the self.
