"What if every time American women went into pharmacies to get our prescriptions for birth control pills refilled, pharmacists required us to reveal our marital status, and then further required all married, female patients to bring our husbands into the store to sign a consent form before the prescribed contraceptives would be handed over?"

But would it surprise you to learn that apparently, many doctors in this country REALLY DO  require men who come to them seeking vasectomies to 'fess up to marital status, and to then get their wives' written consent before the physician will perform the procedure? In some cases, doctors require a face to face meeting with a man's wife - in addition to the signed consent from her - before a vasectomy will be performed.

How did I discover this? Well, without getting all up in my husband's business by offering too many details, suffice it to say that he and I can now credibly report that this inexplicably retro violation of men's rights to privacy and medical autonomy actually does take place.

Amusing reading for sure with some of the comments.

From what I understand most doctors also will not perform the comparitive tubal ligation for women without the consent of her husband, and if not married will not perform it at all. Also if the woman is under 30 with no kids they will not perform it even if both spouses agree.

Since I am unsure about ALL states; I do know that in my state, this is not the fact.  I was required to get my wifes permission for the snip.  This was after SHE and I discussed that if she went natural, I would get it done, and if she had a C-section, she would get it done.  Needless to say, I had no conversation with her Dr, nor was I asked to sign a permission slip.

Matter-of-factly, she relayed to me how the secondary Dr (a female) that she needed to see in case her normal Dr was not available stated, and I quote, "Why don't you get him fixed?"  She was flabergasted to say the least.

It's like that in FL. A man must prove he isn't married or show his wives consent. But that is because someone sued a doctor for performing the proceedure and stopping her from getting pregnant again.
You may sleep soundly at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence upon those who seek to harm you.

Interesting. Notice that if she takes the pill in secret or stops he has no rights but she can sue and has rights if he lies.
