Sept. is prostate cancer awareness month.  To help bring awareness to this scourge, that effects 1 in 6 men in their lifetimes, concerned people are lighting a blue light bulb in convenient locations such as a front porch.

Here's one group that's spearheading this effort.

According to information on the National Cancer Institute website, "It is estimated that 217,730 men will be diagnosed with and 32,050 men will die of cancer of the prostate in 2010."

Table I-1 (http://seer.cancer.gov/csr/ 1975_2007/results_single/ sect_01_table.01.pdf).

This afternoon, I paid $6.99 + tax for a blue compact florescent light bulb at OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) in Los Angeles County.    After cleaning my front porch fixture, and installing the new blue light bulb, I shot this photo using the camera's self-timer.    As I was taking one photo, some neighbors passed by and said, "Say cheese."  I didn't say anything as the camera was timing down, but I think my little blue light bulb is already starting to bring some attention to the scourge of prostate cancer.  Yes, it's still a couple of days until September, but I'm starting early.  We have a lot of catching up to do to bring awareness to this issue that affects so many men.
