February 27, 2015 Dear Steven,Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 1070, the Removing Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening Act. I appreciate hearing from you on such an important issue because it enables me to better represent the beliefs and values of our district. Colon cancer is a serious health concern. In 2015, there will be an estimated 39,610 new patients diagnosed with colon cancer in the United States. To deal with this health problem, all Americans need to have access to early preventive care such as colorectal cancer screening. As you may know, Medicare currently covers colonoscopy screening without cost sharing. But if an additional therapeutic treatment is conducted, cost sharing is required. The cost sharing for therapeutic treatment to remove polyps could discourage the use of the colonoscopy. This legislation would eliminate cost sharing for these additional therapeutic treatments for Medicare beneficiaries. This bill never made it to the House floor for a vote. Please rest assured I will keep your views in mind should this bill be reintroduced to the U.S. House. I encourage you to continue to contact me about the issues important to you. Unfortunately, the letter refers to the "Removing Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening Act" rather than the topic of my email, which is "Obama's FY 2016 budget eliminating all funding for CDC prostate cancer program".
