This also makes me wonder about the nature of today's press.
We have freedom of press, censorship is forbidden. Why is that? Because the truth is paramount and suppressing discourse by the government does not further the discovery of truth.
However, in these times, the main threat to the truth does not come from the outside, but from the inside. From a corrupted, gullible, lazy press, journalists more concerned with their career than their responsibility.
Maybe it would be time to hold journalists accountable for what they wreak. Some sort of media integrity council to judge those that do damage. After all, if a doctor makes a mistake and a person is hurt or a life is lost, he is held accountable. Are journalists above this? I don't think so.
Or maybe the whole idea of a commercial press isn't so good. Maybe the press should be a non-profit institution, tax-funded. Isn't the truth something for the good of all society?
Just my 2 cents.
