New device gives women teeth where it matters

A rape victim once wished for teeth "where it mattered". Now a device has been designed to "bite" a rapist's penis. The patented device looks and is worn like a tampon, but it is hollow and attaches itself with tiny hooks to a man's penis during penetration.

"We have to do something to protect ourselves. While this will not prevent rape it will assist in identifying attackers and securing convictions," claims Sonette Ehlers, inventor of the device.

"Over the past three years I have been working on this device. It is now completely safe and ready to be manufactured and distributed," she said.

It had been designed with engineers, gynaecologists, psychologists and urologists. It was "hygienic - no human hands will be involved in the manufacture".

In the event of rape, the device folds itself around the rapist's penis, attaching to the skin with microscopic hooks. It is only when the rapist withdraws that he will realise the device is clamped around his penis.

"We still need to focus on men as perpetrators of this heinous crime."

Mbuyiselo Botha, spokesperson for the Men's Forum, said anything that could empower women should be welcomed.

"I would encourage my wife and two daughters to wear this device. It would send a signal to would-be rapists that they won't have it easy."

Comment: I have seen articles like this before that turn out to be fake, but this does seem real.

I cannot experss how depressed this makes me feel, especially the comment from the Men's forum spokesman!

And again it works on the basis of the idea that men in general don't have a problem with rape and we need to be worked on to make sure we don't do it!

I my view rape is committed by a small, mentally ill part of society and is not condoned amoungst normal men in the slightest, yet activists still think the best way to solve this problem is to alienate men even more and make women even more fearful of men.

Plus the article say's that it will help prevent HIV but surely having a man bleeding inside the woman is putting that woman at greater risk to infection!

I would like to add that I am in full support of women defending themselves from these sick acts but I don't feel that this is a good way to go about it.

This device could be misused so much, especially if it is used as evidence of rape, what is to stop a woman consenting to sex, whilst this device is in place. The man has to then go to ER to get it removed, they will then proberbly call the police and he is screwed!

(don't walk through the bad part of town alone at night; don't go home with a guy you just met unless you intend for "something to happen"; don't wear a minsikirt and low cut top walking on the street at 2am; don't be a c*cktease and then cry foul when things suddenly went in a direction you didn't like- if you don't want something to happen make your intent clear; don't go to a frat party and get sloppy drunk so you pass out or can't remember what happened the next morning; etc.)

- not that these actions EXCUSE the rapist, but tehy do a hell of a lot to ENCOURAGE/ENABLE the rapist. They also do a hell of a lot to create situations where SHE DIDN"T WANT IT BUT IT ALSO WASN"T RAPE (i.e., drunkenness (ppor judgement, wanting it then changing your mind), encouraging him right up to the point of penetration without making it clear you didn't want it, etc. do not consitute rape, even if they may not be what she wants. Rape doesn't constitute "unwanted sex", rape is "unwanted sex with a person who said no, or who was calearly incapable of giving or refusing consent". It is not "sex with someone who changed tehir mind in the middle or after he afct", "sex with someone who encouraged you to have sex with her even though she didn't want it", "sex with someone who's judgemnet was chemiucally imapired", etc.

Actually, we should belatedly (this has been around since 2003) thank FemDefence for providing us with a basis for a Urban Legends style expose of themselves (and what this "campaign" is really about).  The "campaign" should be debunked anytime it rears its' ugly head on the web or in public.  The damage is not in the device itself, but in the way it is being used to promote anti-male dialogue.
