RADAR Alert: Joseph Biden Wants to Stack the VAWA Hearing; We Say, "No Way Jose!"

On July 19th, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. And right now, Senator Biden only wants to invite persons who will sing the praises of VAWA. In other words, he wants to have a rubber-stamp hearing.

It's crucial that the Judiciary Committee hear the truth about VAWA -- how it ignores the research about DV and grossly discriminates against men.

Two persons who have each spent over three decades researching family violence:

• Murray Straus, Ph.D., founder of the University of New Hampshire Family Research Laboratory
  
• Richard Gelles, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania
  

These are the people who should be testifying on July 19, not the advocates who knowingly slant the truth and discriminate against needy DV victims.

This is Week 1 of our Shock and Awe campaign. So do this today:

We're asking you to contact the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and tell them:

"Don't let the VAWA hearing be rubber-stamp event. Invite Drs. Murray Straus and Richard Gelles to testify. And be sure to invite a male victim of DV who has been turned away by a VAWA-funded program."

Remember to make your points politely and respectfully.  Being rude or making extreme analogies (like comparisons to Nazis) will only serve to discredit our cause.

By all means, contact all of them.  The reason Biden's of particular interest is that this bill is his "baby".  He introduced it in the early 1990s, and when it didn't pass, he kept coming back with it every year.  By 1994 he'd figured out that he couldn't get it through on its own, so he grafted it onto the crime bill and got it through that way.  VAWA is one of his primary achievements in Congress.

Biden recently announced he'll be seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2008 presidential election, and you can bet he'll be touting VAWA as one of his major achievements.  Word is that the other Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee won't criticize it out of deference to their friend Biden.

The Republicans, on the other hand, may find that it serves their own self-interest to point out the blatant bias in Biden's law.  So it's important to make sure that the credit/blame for the bias be attributed to the politician most responsible for that bias.

Biden is like Stalin in which he wants to rule by Cult of Personality. Alarming how the Femocrats resemble the Communist party more and more every passing year.

I finally got through to Arlen Specter today.  He's the ranking Republican on that list.  Of all those I was able to reach by FAX he was the hardest to get through to.  Patrick Leahy (D) would not give out his FAX number, and I could not reach Lindsey Graham.  I tried that number for his FAX today, but again got a recorded voice message that would not take a FAX.

Now is not the time to go partisan.  Let's keep the heat on all of them, and we can sort out friends and foes later.  Let's really put the pressure on them and see who's responsible for promoting this man-hating bigotry.  Let the chips fall were they may.  I'm tired of a free pass being given to all the man-hating legislation that comes before our elected reps.

Thanks, I was actually hinting for someone to help keep the VAWA threads "bumped" there.  When I did an pre-post inhouse search for "VAWA" there, the only result was a post I'd done on Dr. Phil's coverage of DV back in May.  They restarted their BB using a new BB format sometime during the winter and didn't repost their archives.  I didn't expect to find much, but nothing on VAWA?
